Our music is ready to sell! For a small cost, you can sell your music online with independent music and social networking sites (such as Numubu!). You can also sell from your own website with Paypal. We also want to sell on iTunes and the other major commercial digital music sales sites. For this, you have to go through a distributor (who will take an additional percentage of your sales on top of the iTunes 30%). Distributors, such as TuneCore or CD Baby, accept all artists. Others have a selection process. There are a growing number options, so you have to compare prices and evaluate visibility versus costs. We decided to avoid the hassle of home based orders, dealing with all the mailings, including possible returns, and billing. We ended up chosing a Quebec based distribution service (RSB) that will sell and ship our physical CD's along with digital distribution to most music sales sites... So after a year of work and a ton of money, it's off to the races next week!

SODRAC, SOCAN, SOPROQ, so what???

Before you can go about selling your music, you have to deal with these agencies so you don't violate copyright and you get the money you deserve. It's easy to get very confused with all the copyright and royalty agencies. Here's the super simplified rundown of what royalties each manage.

SODRAC and CMRRA: for MUSIC AND SONG WRITERS reproduction and synchronization (TV, film and commercials use).
SOCAN: also for MUSIC AND SONG WRITERS but performances (radio play and live shows).
SOPROQ: for the MUSIC PRODUCERS (radio play and store ambiance music).
ARTISTI: for PERFORMERS live performance recording, reproduction and radio play (recent addition).

If you're not registered with the right agency or agencies, you're likely not getting the royalties. The good news... if you write, compose, sing and produce your own music, you can get royalties from all four agencies!

Are physical albums going the way of the dinosaurs? You can still find store shelves full of CD's, yet digital sales continue to grow while physical sales drop. In fact, in case you missed it, January 2012 marked the cross over point where digital sales now outpace physical for the first time in history. So CD's aren't dead yet, but they may soon be on life support! In our case, our social media data confirm that we have an middle age following, mostly in the 35 to 50 range. Many in this age group still like physical CD's. In cases such as this, you may wish to press some. This then leads to the whole digipak vs jewel case debate. The evidence here seems to point towards a growing preference for the digipak, even though they cost more. You also want to use a reputable reproduction company and graphic artist. After all, if physical CD's are soon to be extinct, you may as well make them worth keeping!

Next up... distribution and sales

While many artists chose or insist on all original material, there may be some merit to including a few covers on your album. The reality is that if your fan base is small, you want to create music that will attract new fans. Great original music is a must, but by doing a few covers you draw in fans that know, and hopefully already like, the cover songs. You can then introduce them to your own style, through your unique versions of the covers and your originals.

Up next digital or physical?

This happened in our case Prelude. It was a fluke that we put After the Goldrush on the album, it was a case of we still had some studio time and they asked if we wanted to add anything else and we thought of the song we had sung at a bus stop - After the Goldrush and thanks to kenny Everett who kept playing it, people wanted to know where they could get it, that led to it being released as a single world wide and the rest is history as they say...

Wow! It just shows to go ya'. It's amazing how things happen, and this is proof that it's probably a lot harder to make things happen as opposed to letting things happen - with some effort, of course.

That's a great example and I love the song!

How to Save A Fortune on Recording Your Album

The largest expenses of any professional album production are the studio and musician fees. We discovered that you can hire great quality studios and musicians for a fraction of the cost if you look outside major cities. By using a studio and musicians in smaller areas, you can get your overall album production budget to around $15K to $20K (instead of $50K in the city). We found that you can't do it for much less than this, unless you get people to work for free or lower the quality. A note on using friends and family as your musicians and back vocals to save money – only do this if they are of the same calibre as someone you would hire! It simply doesn't make sense to use poor quality musicians and singers to save money when this will lower the quality of your entire project!

Up next - song selection (how many and covers vs. originals)

The Budget – Can I produce an album without going broke?

We wanted something high quality (just like the large labels) from start to finish, not an album that looked and sounded like it was recorded in someone's basement and reproduced on a home computer (no offence to the many high quality basement studios out there). Some advised us that they had been able to deliver with only a $5,000 budget. Others stated it would cost around $50,000. Many costs are reasonably fixed, such as the typical $100 per song mastering fee (don't even think about skimping on this!) but the largest expenses of any album production are the studio and musician fees. We found a way to save a fortune in this area, without sacrificing quality.

We'll tell you about it in our next post!

Our independent music production company was recently created with an initial mission of producing a first album by Lise-Angela. If this venture is successful (we're sure it will be!) we plan to produce other new artist music.

Producing a first album can be a daunting task. There is no lack of advice on the internet. The problem was selecting which advice to follow! We will be publishing a series of posts describing the high (and low) points of this voyage towards a first album production.

The first post up next - What does an independent album production cost?
