Sir George Henry Martin CBE (3 January 1926 – 8 March 2016)

We are truly saddened at the loss today of our APRS President, Sir George Martin. George was always a dedicated and loyal supporter of the association and his presence at our annual fellowship lunch was always a highlight of the year.

George was a true legend of our industry. Without his vision the musical landscape of the UK and indeed the world would have been much poorer.

Not only did George create much of the music of the seminal sixties but also went on to found Air Studios in London and Montserrat. His expertise encouraged us all who worked with him to produce our finest efforts.
Our industry owes him a great debt of gratitude for enriching all of our lives and enabling of us to work at something we love.

Our sincere condolences to Judy and all the family, our thoughts are with you.

All right music makers, this one is important. We seriously need all of you to stand together on this one and voice your concerns. Things are moving in the right direction regarding the Pandora Musician's Pay cuts, but the battle hasn't been won yet. So, can I urge you to head over to www.grammy.com/action and have a read and take ACTION! Thanks

Music producer Steve Albini has given some characteristically blunt views on digital piracy, in an 'Ask Me Anything' interview with users of tech site Reddit.

"I reject the term 'piracy'," he writes. "It's people listening to music and sharing it with other people, and it's good for musicians because it widens the audience for music.
The record industry doesn't like trading music because they see it as lost sales, but that's nonsense."
He goes on: "There won't ever be a mass-market record industry again, and that's fine with me because that industry didn't operate for the benefit of the musicians or the audience, the only classes of people I care about.
Free distribution of music has created a huge growth in the audience for live music performance, where most bands spend most of their time and energy anyway..."

Exactly - which begs the question "How do today's record companies now have the chutzpah to ask for a 360 deal when they're doing *squat*?" ...but I digress...

Bang on the money Elliott! I think you should digress :

It's true. Is this because of the room itself and how the sound bounces or more because of proper mic-ing or a bit of both?

Tue., May. 1, 2012 - 10:45 AM

Quite honestly, I've heard amazing drums sounds recorded in a very small drum booth. That said, I take Eddie's point that when you have a large (quality) resonant space, there is so much more "spacial realness" (depth) that you can dial in to your final mix - if so desired

If you listen to a piece of music in a loss-less format such as 'flac' and then listen to the same on mp3... you will hear - besides the obvious compression etc... serious timing issues... mp3's have their place... such as keeping yourself from getting bored on a long train journey via a portable music player... but for serious listening through a good system... it just makes you frustrated to hear the timing all over the place...

Mon., Apr. 30, 2012 - 8:51 AM

Totally agreed.

Tue., May. 1, 2012 - 3:13 AM

Unfortunately most of the kids think this is it. mp3 on little earbuds or on those insanely bass heavy b headphones that rapper came out with. So it's no bass at all or more bass than is natural. Anyways, I think we have ourselves a massive educational project on our hands.

APRS is going to Frankfurt Musik Messe to scope out the possibility of taking space there next year. We'll be there talking to the organisers and various manufacturers with the view of taking our hospitality booth and provide our members with the APRS Hub space, brochure displays and a general networking area. If you'd like to hook up, I'll be walking around the various halls on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. See you there. Viel Spass.

Happy to report that we have received TWO applications for TAP grants in the last few hours at the increased rate of £1,800!!! This has got to be one of the best offers of support to attend an exhibition and get your foot in the door of the East European market. So worth setting aside a moment or two to consider attending. Fortunately the 2 page application form is pretty straightforward. It's first come, first served - there are only a handful of grants available at this newly increased rate. Drop us a line here on FB, or on admin@aprs.co.uk. See you all there
