I lead monthly Beginner Blues Guitar workshops in East London at The Blues Kitchen in Shoreditch. The workshops are very popular. I would like to run the same workshops in locations around the UK. Specifically, Glasgow, Swansea, St Ives in Cornwall and Norwich. If you are an events manager or location manager and would like to explore the idea of me teaching at your venue, please message me. And if you are a guitar distributor, you might like to discuss how my teaching can help to market your products.

OK. Here it is. A Gift Of Serenity is now available on Kindle. You don't need a Kindle to read it as you can download Kindle apps for phones. tablets and computers. If you like books by Joseph Campbell, Peter Ackroyd, Dan Brown, Charles Fort, J.K.Rowling, Mervyn Peake, Tolkien et al you might like my little go at writing an extended story.
If you liked the FB ghost story I did a few years ago, you will probably like this.
If you like stories that drop hints and clues, you'll probably like this.
So if you do read it and find any major errors please let me know. For example, if you are a farmer in Devon or Cornwall tell me if I've got it wrong about harvest times. If I do change the book as a result I will send you a copy of Sly Guitar as a thank you. And as you can see, the journey continues in the next book. And if you do like it, please tell you friends.

I've just put a very short story on Amazon Kindle. More of an experiment than anything else, although I must say, the story would make a nice little TV show. I would like to have charged a lot less, but there is a minimum selling price on Kindle.

Had a wonderful afternoon playing a big set at the Cropredy Fringe Festival, so a big up to Jill, Linda and Peter for making it happen. I did an hour and a half for a very nice audience and only screwed up a couple of numbers. That's probably because I didn't take my own advice to drink lots of water, not lots of beer! I think that whenever and wherever I play it's a difficult ask for my audience. Most people have never heard of me and my songs do not fit any kind of pigeon hole. Yesterday I ranged between pure folk, blues, punk, weird looping etc Well, it is what it is.

OK folks. Here's one for all of you crowd funding philanthropists out there. I do a weekly radio show for an internet station called East London Radio, based in Leytonstone in East London, which is where I live. It's run totally by volunteers. And you can hear all kinds of shows. It's also used to help young people train up for working in radio etc. As with many charities, we are struggling to pay the bills. So..... if you fancy helping out with some micro or macro moolah, here's the place to do it. Thanks. John Ellis http://igg.me/at/SAVE-ELR/x

Warning! I am on the blag. On June 4th, I am running a little workshop called 'Bob for Beginners'. I'm going to teach some beginner guitarists how to do a reasonable version of some Bob Dylan songs. The event takes place in a little cafe/bar in Leytonstone, East London. The cafe is called All You Read Is Love. The Danish brother and sister who run the place are major Bob Dylan fans and it's mostly his music that gets played. Now, here comes the blag. It would be truly magical if anyone who has a personal connection with Mr Z could ask him if he could send a very short 15 secs video message to the beginner guitarists via Skype or similar. Major long shot, I know but I guess if you don't ask you don't receive! Thank you. John Ellis

Graves in The Cradle

Posted on Thu., Oct. 30, 2014 - 5:43 AM

Graves in the cradle.

There are graves in the cradle
Where mothers kiss their children
Dress up in your party frocks
You're dining with the saints

Blow on the trumpets
Bang on the drums
Watch the walls of Jericho fall down

A black flag shrouds
The land between 2 rivers
And the snake has shifted shape
To the shadow of a man

Chorus

A little headless doll
Bleaching in the desert sands
A page torn from the holy book
Is folded to the shape of a gun

Chorus

X marks the spot
Dig up the genie's bottle
Write down a letter
In blood from the sacrificial lamb

Chorus

Hello Folks. I am developing a major multi-media project around, initially, guitar tuition. Part of the project involves the creation of a TV show. I have had a meeting with a major production company who like the idea but will not move any further forward until we have some "talent" making positive noises about being on the show. At the moment "positive noises" are all that is required. So..........if you are a big name artist/guitarist (I know you are out there and I know you know who you are), and you would like to help get this thing off the ground, all I need is a little message saying something like "Sure, I'd be happy to come down, sit on the sofa and talk about guitars and guitar playing etc". This will be UK based at the moment but Skype interviews etc are not out of the question. Also, we are running out of finance so.....you know the score! Many thanks NuMuBu people.

40 years ago I had a beautiful acoustic made for me by the great British luthier Dick Knight. I used it on many sessions. 20 years ago, when things got tough financially, I sold it to a great friend. Today, in a wonderful act of generosity he gave it back to me. It still plays beautifully and sounds amazing. However, it is in need of a major cosmetic overhaul/repair job. So any suggestions for a UK based luthier who might like to take it on?

Holy Innocents

Posted on Wed., Oct. 2, 2013 - 9:19 AM

Laid out like a line of washing
Little children must be dreaming

Playing football in a dusty street
Angel of death Passover

Holy Innocents
Wholly Innocent
Ain’t no road to Damascus happening here

When did the devil come to town?
He don’t pick sides just throws it around

Just like the holy books do say
There’ll be a heavy price to pay

Holy Innocents
Wholly Innocent
Ain’t no road to Damascus happening here

The reaper don’t take silver or gold
He takes your children and lays them in a row

There ain’t the words to name the pain
