LIVE STREAMING: How-to Instructions

Broadcasting live video/audio using NMB Live! is not hard to do. You will need the following:

  1. A webcam (built in or external).
  2. An audio interface (external box, add-on card, or built-in).
  3. A web connection (hardwired is always best, but wireless works as long as you have a strong connection).
  4. A NMB Live account (if you dont have one, go ahead and sign up for free).

Part A: Setting up your visuals

Simply plug in your webcam to the computer and point it at yourself. If you want to check how it looks before going further, or actually broadcasting, you can sign into Skype and look at your own image. If you're using an external camera, you will need to select it from the live broadcast window. Here's how:

  1. Log in to your account.
  2. Begin your live broadcast by clicking the green "Go Live Now" button that's just beside your profile picture.
  3. In the popup window Click on "Allow"  to allow access your camera.
  4. If your camera is external, right-click (for Windows) or control-click (for Mac) directly on the video panel of your live streaming window.
  5. Select "Settings" from the drop-down menu.
  6. Click on the webcam icon and select your camera from the drop-down menu.

Part B: Setting up your sound

There are several ways to go here. The easiest is to simply use your laptops built-in microphone, which works well for webinars, or spoken-word. It can also work well for anything music-based, however some laptops have great built-in mics while others have terrible ones. For best results, use a digital audio interface, either external connected to your computer, or your computer's built-in interface. You can then either connect a mixing board to it, or connect one or two live microphones to it.

1. Using a mixing console

a) If you are using a mixing console, simply connect the two outputs of the mixing console to the inputs on your audio interface/soundcard. Check that both channels are set to the same level, or one side of the stereo signal will be louder than the other.

b) Play your instrument(s) and or sing (whatever you are planning to broadcast). Watch for peaks on the audio interface/card (and mixing console if you are using one), and wear headphones to monitor your sound. What you hear should be what the listeners hear!

c) Visit your own profile page and click on the green "Go live now" button near your profile pic. There will be a short moment of brown background with grey squares then your video image should appear. If it doesnt, check that the camera is plugged into the usb port and that the drivers are installed.

d) You will need to select your audio source as the software sometimes defaults to using the camera's or laptop's mic. To check your audio source, right click (or control-click on a Mac) on the area of the screen where your video image is displayed, and select "Settings" from the drop-down menu. This brings up a small window which has a little microphone icon at the bottom. Click on it, and select your audio interface/card as the sound source.

e) Just as in any live performance, we strongly recommend that you do a proper sound check before your audience shows up. To do this, simply get someone you know to view your broadcast test from a remote area so they can let you know how it sounds. Again, click on the "Go live now" button (if you havent already) and wait for the video to kick in. Check your sound source as per step d), and play a song. Ask your listener if they hear any distortion and reduce the level if they do. You can adjust audio levels on your mixing console, on your audio interface, or by left-clicking on the video window.

2. Using a built-in microphone

If you are doing a webinar or speech-based broadcast, you can opt to just plug straight into your audio interface card, or simply use the camera's or laptop's microphone (these are built in) and skip to step c.

If you are still having problems or have any questions, email us as at live@nmblive.com.

LIVE STREAMING: Using External Encoders for Higher Quality

Some users will prefer to use separate video/audio encoding software such as FMLE by Adobe in order to get higher quality audio & video. Here's how to do this:

First download FMLE (free download): http://www.adobe.com/ca/products/flash-media-encoder.html

Then:

- Start a live stream by clicking on the green Go Live Now button, then allowing access to your camera and microphone.

- Once you see yourself in the video window, click on EXT under the video window so that it's green. The video window should go black and say "waiting for external feed".

- Run FMLE.

- On the right side of the screen, where is says FMS URL, copy and paste the "rtmp://..." text you find on NMB Live. You'll find it under the video window in the tab (which should already be selected) that says "EXTERNAL ENCODER INFO", under the heading "CONNECTING STRING FOR ENCODER".

- Copy the STREAM NAME info (under the same EXTERNAL ENCODER INFO tab and paste into the right side of the FMLE screen where it says STREAM (just below where you pasted the rtmp://... address.

- Click the CONNECT button right under that on FMLE. If it's connected successfully, the button will change to a DISCONNECT button.

Now you can play with your settings on FMLE. Here are some suggestions:

- On the left side of the screen, try the following:

VIDEO: needs to be checked

DEVICE: Make sure your camera is selected (you'll be able to see your video at the top of FMLE screen)

FORMAT (under VIDEO): H.264

FRAME RATE: 15

INPUT SIZE: 640 x 360 (make sure to check "Maintain aspect ratio"

BIT RATE: 200 kbps or higher depending on how powerful your computer and internet connection are.

OUTPUT SIZE: 640 x 360

- In the middle set of parameters for AUDIO, try these:

AUDIO: needs to be checked

DEVICE: Select your audio source

FORMAT: AAC

Channels: Stereo

Sample rate: 44,100 khz

Bit rate: 128 kbps

- On the right side, make sure that AUTO ADJUST is clicked and that "Degrade Quality" is selected.

- Click the big green START button at the bottom. At this point, you should be able to see the stream on NMB Live . You will see a delay that wasn't there before. That's because the signal is now going from FMLE (where there will be no delay) to the live server in California, then back to the NuMuBu.com site's server. But otherwise, you should have crystal clear sound and really smooth video.

TAGS: What are they?

The tags on songs is basically song credits. They allow you to provide a linked credit from your song to any of the other musicians or people/studio, etc. who have worked on that song, provided they are on NMB Live. You can have a look at some of my song credits to get a better idea: http://www.nmblive.com/115802-songs.html
Also, if someone has been tagged/credited on a song, they end up getting that song listed in the "Tunography" part of their Music section. Check out my tunography by clicking on the "Tunography" tab near the top of the page: http://www.nmblive.com/115802-songs.html - it's a list of all of the songs that others have given me credit for as their guitarist.
In this way, tagging acts as cross-promotion. Someone who visits my songs and tunography will see songs by others who were kind enough to give me credit. Because there is a link back to them, they are doing themselves a favour by crediting me.
If you get your other musicians on to NMB Live, you can give them credit-tags on your songs and videos. In this way your songs and videos, and even photos, will show up on their profiles which gives you more links back to your profile.

Tagging on a song is giving someone or something credit on a song. Same for videos and photos. They allow you to provide a linked credit from your song, video or photo to any of the other musicians or people/studio, etc. on NMB Live who are involved, provided they are on NMB Live.

Also, if someone has been tagged/credited on a song, they end up getting that song listed in the "Tunography" part of their Music section. (example: click on the Tunography section of this profile: http://www.nmblive.com/115802-songs.html).

In this way, tagging acts as cross-promotion. Someone who visits your tunography will see songs by others who were kind enough to give you a tag/credit. Because there is a link back to them, they are doing themselves a favour by giving you the tag/credit.

TUNOGRAPHY: What is it?

Tunography is a list of songs that you have participated in and that you have been tagged in as part of the song credits.
If you have been tagged/credited on a song, you end up getting that song listed in the "Tunography" part of your Music section.
In this way, tune-tagging and Tunography acts as cross-promotion. Someone who visits your tunography will see songs by others who were kind enough to give you credit. Because there is a link back to them, they are doing themselves a favour by crediting you.
